They say that California Hotels are everywhere but the original is in Todos Santos.

And we ask ourselves, What came first, the famous song of the Eagles or the hotel that bears the same name in the city of Todos Santos? What about myth, legend or reality behind the walls of the Hotel California?

During our trip through Baja California we made a one-night stop and a couple of days in the quiet Todos Santos. Although we settled in The Hotelito, moved by curiosity, We make a stop at the Hotel California to see their facilities and try the menu they offer in their restaurant.

Todos Santos is a place of passage in Baja California. Despite offering a perfect setting to rest and make excursions in the area, this town does not have the massification that is observed in other more tourist places such as San José or Cabo San Lucas. Fortunately, the fact that bathing is not allowed on the wild beaches of the Pacific that border the coast of Todos Santos has saved this destination from the massification that is observed in other territories of the region.

The California Hotel in Todos Santos opened in 1950 with the same name for a Chinese named Wong. 26 years before the song of the Eagles with the same name began to cover the lists of success worldwide. Its owner wanted to appear to be Mexican and put the original name of Antonio Tabasco and since then happened to be known by locals as the Chinese Tabasco. The hotel had 16 rooms at that time and, thanks to Mr. Tabasco's innovative ideas, it was the first store in Todos Santos that offered cold beer thanks to the ice supplies he himself imported from La Paz.

After the death of Antonio Tabasco the hotel was put up for sale, changed hands and went through less glorious times until at the beginning of 2000 it was bought by a Canadian couple. They had the good taste of keeping the name and reforming the Hotel California with antique furniture brought from their own collection and Mexican art items.
