It is an option that I use in extreme cases. When traveling through exotic countries I always tend to walk around the town or city in search of the place where the locals are the majority. I rarely listen to the guide. I like to mix with people and discover new things.
The dish is going to be a surprise, especially in places where English does not appear or by any means and one only has the option of playing roulette with the menu, pointing to the neighbor's side dish or even getting into the kitchen, opening the fridge and point out what you see in healthy conditions out there and perform a non-existent pan movement with your hands.
Sometimes there are canteen-style counters where this communicative work is much easier for us but in places like the interior, mimicry and the performing arts are imposed.
There are days, however, when one feels weak. After a good season staging situations to eat something you end up being emotionally defeated and looking for an easy situation to eat. It is at that moment that I enter McDonald's mode and get into one of them and simply with the magic words “Regular Big Mac menu with Coke” the food appears by magic.
The funny thing is that it usually gets more expensive than most dishes offered in local restaurants.
